The Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band is named after Robert Barbulak and Malcolm Bokenfohr, two dedicated members of the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, who were killed in an automobile accident not of their cause in November 1993. The RMM band was formed in January 1994 to continue the development of talented and dedicated players, as Rob and Malcolm were.

  • SFU Partnership Camps
    SFU operates a range of camps in partnership with various community
    organizations and professionals, following the same general
    administration procedures as all SFU camps. With the partner camps
    staffing is provided by their organization using SFU facilities. May
    include recreation time and SFU Camps program t-shirts.

    Learn the Bagpipes (8–13 years)
    Taught by members of the World Champion SFU Pipe Band, this Camp
    teaches the basics of playing the Scottish bagpipes. On practice
    chanters, students will learn how to play the scale, grace notes, and
    embellishments, leading to a couple simple tunes. Students will also
    learn about parts of the bagpipes and the reeds that produce the various
    sounds. Practice chanters will be provided on loan or for separate
    purchase. Students interested in further instruction may join the SFU
    Junior pipe band in September.

    Learn Scottish Snare Drumming
    Taught by members of the World Champion SFU Pipe Band, this Camp
    teaches the basics of playing the Scottish snare drums. Using practice
    pads and drumsticks, students will learn how to correctly hold and
    maneuver the sticks, play basic hand-to-hand taps and simple rudiments,
    leading to a couple simple scores. Students will also learn about parts
    of the Scottish snare drum and how its sound is created. Practice pads
    and sticks will be provided on loan or for separate purchase. Students
    interested in further instruction may join the SFU Junior pipe band in
    September. Closing date for registering is June 22.

  • The Robert Malcolm Memorial 2008/2009 Pipe Band season is well underway at the Burnaby Mountain Campus of Simon Fraser University.

    Under the direction of the five-time world champion SFU Pipe Band, the RMM Junior band program offers youth ages 6-17 years the opportunity to learn bagpipes, side, tenor and bass drums.
